The urban regeneration project of the Municipality of Bellano concerns the redevelopment of the former Cantoni cotton mill building complex, a building consisting of several bodies and covering an area of over 17,500 square metres. The objective of this intervention includes different uses: on the one hand, the importance of obtaining a receptive development of the area is combined with a day SPA (wellness - beauty) project it is considered to find large spaces to be dedicated to museum, congress and didactic activities. The project stems from the need to have a high level of accommodation and wide availability in terms of places for the east coast of Lake Como, which is lacking, linked to a strong tourist development of the "Lake Como" brand. The related activities are directed towards experiential, emotional and highly cultural and environmental tourism.
The former Cantoni cotton mill will be redeveloped to convert the large spaces into a place characterised by a functional mix, based on the promotion of local culture and the territory. “Brand”, a cultural promotion centre and showcase for the municipality of Bellano and the entire lake area, will be born here. Specifically, the following will be implemented:
New technologies and construction techniques will make the building energy-efficient, according to the concept of green building, to reduce the emission of pollutants and harmful agents to the atmosphere and to cancel the negative impact on the environment.
In addition, part of the former cotton mill spaces will be recovered to create public spaces for wellness and indoor sports, with swimming pools and a wellness centre, enriching the local offer.
Bellano is a municipality on the eastern shore of Lake Como, in the province of Lecco, at the northern exit of Valsassina. The town’s main attraction is the Orrido, a small canyon formed by the erosion of the Pioverna River before it entered the nearby lake, a process that began 15 million years ago. The Church of Saints Nazaro and Celso (built-in 1348) is in Gothic style. Bellano is also the setting for most novels by local writer Andrea Vitali and the birthplace of 17th-century poet and writer Sigismondo Boldoni.
The area of interest is strategically located between the historic town centre, the lakeside and the Orrido. is easily accessible from the lake (Navigazione Lago di Como), from the railway station (Trenord Milan-Tirano line, in the Lecco-Colico section), and via the SS36 of Lake Como and Spluga. The area is central to Bellano’s main tourist attractions: the Church of Santi Nazaro e Celso, the walkway over the Orrido, the Ca’ del Diavolo, the characteristic streets of the centre and the lido.
