Levanzo Island – Municipality of Favignana (TP) – Capo Grosso Lighthouse

The Capo Grosso Lighthouse is located in a panoramic position at the northern end of Levanzo, the smallest island of the Aegadian archipelago, in the Capo Grosso area. The island, which has preserved its original habitat intact, where a valuable flora thrives (especially the rock flora), is part of the municipality of Favignana, in the province of Trapani. The property, which is in extremely poor maintenance conditions with the exception of the lantern, will be redeveloped through a multi-year State leasing licence, without being sold. The property, by virtue of its location, is well suited to being used as a tourist-accommodation facility.

The property consists of a main building and some small service buildings, on a single level, the lighthouse tower, a small internal quadrangular courtyard delimited by low stone walls; the property is completed by a large external appurtenant area that extends for approximately 4,500 sqm. The buildings are all made with a masonry structure. The cylindrical lighthouse tower, which rises to a height of 12 m, is characterised by the large white-plastered lantern. The main building has mostly regular rectangular openings and a projecting cornice. The roof has slightly sloping pitches except for the part above the south-east corner of the main building. With the exception of the lantern (which, together with the internal courtyard, will remain in government use by the Navy), all the buildings are in an evident state of decay.

The Capo Grosso lighthouse is located at the northern end of the island of Levanzo (5 km² in surface area), the smallest of the islands that make up the Aegadian archipelago, 3.5 km away from the town, on a promontory overlooking the sea (60 metres above sea level), which is not easy to access. The island is part of the municipality of Favignana (population 4,513), the largest of the islands of the archipelago, in the province of Trapani. The territory is mainly mountainous, with high coasts overlooking the sea of white limestone rocks, with numerous caves. In these history-rich waters, on March 10, 241 BC, one of the greatest naval battles of all time took place, in which the Romans destroyed the Carthaginian fleet, ending the First Punic War. The area is connected to the island of Favignana and the mainland (Trapani) by a ferry and hydrofoil service.
