Risk profile

The former naval college “Niccolò Tommaseo” is a building designed and built by Eng. Arch. Gaetano Minnucci (1896-1980) between 1934 and 1939 on behalf of the Central Command of the Italian Fascist youth organization Opera Nazionale Balilla. The area on which the building stands, called “former Villa Dionisi”, was an estate of approximately 65,000 sqm that extends along the northern shore of the western inlet of the internal port of Brindisi. In 1943, it became the seat of the Naval Academy, while at the end of 1946 the building, intended to accommodate Julian, Istrian and Dalmatian refugee students, was named after the Dalmatian scholar Niccolò Tommaseo. The area, covered by vegetation consisting essentially of tall trees, has, due to its particular orography, a complex panoramic configuration. The complex is owned by the Puglia Region, which signed a loan for use agreement with the Municipality in 2019 (Rep. 12161 of 11/07/2019).

The complex of the former naval college “Niccolò Tommaseo” is located in the peripheral area of Brindisi (population 82,298), near the seafront, 4.5 km from the city centre (Piazza Cairoli), reachable in a few minutes by car, on foot or using public transport. The area in which the property is located is well-connected to the centre and is strategic, especially given its proximity to the main places of historical, cultural and tourist interest in the city (the Swabian Castle, the Cathedral of Brindisi, the Verdi Theatre). The SS-16, the main Adriatic road that connects Brindisi with Padua, passes 3 km from the property and allows rapid connections to the A-14 motorway. The train station, on the regional and high-speed line (Lecce-Bari-Roma Termini) is 3.5 km from the property (7 minutes by car, 25 minutes on foot), while Brindisi International Airport is 2.5 km away (5-7 minutes by car).
