The Luigi Ferraris Stadium, inaugurated in 1911 and named after the Genoese footballer of the same name, is one of the most historic sports facilities in Italy.
The renovation project by Genova Stadium S.r.l., the city company equally co-owned by the two local clubs, aims to bring the stadium up to UEFA standards for category 4 stadiums, to host international football events, ensuring the required capacity, media facilities, safety, accessibility, environmental sustainability, and the reduction of urban impact.
Via Giovanni de Prà, 1 - 16139 Genova (GE) Between 1988 and 1990, the Stadium was demolished and rebuilt as it is today, in view of the 1990 Italy World Cup, based on a project by Architect Vittorio Gregotti. Organizing an event of this magnitude required the adaptation of sports facilities in several Italian cities to meet the strict standards imposed by FIFA. The current renovation and repurposing project aims to adapt the Ferraris to UEFA standards for category 4 stadiums, improving safety, accessibility, quality for media and spectators, environmental sustainability, and reduction of urban impact.
The objective is to further integrate the stadium into the socio-economic fabric of the neighbourhood, making it usable every day through flexible spaces designed for non-sporting events, commercial activities, catering, cultural and educational functions, a sports medical centre, and recreational activities. The stadium has a total area of 76,420 sqm (60,490 covered and 15,930 uncovered) and a cadastral area of 27,260 sqm. The GLA will increase from 54,592 to 60,541 sqm while maintaining over 30,000 seats and including additional hospitality, F&B, media, commercial, technical, parking, and restroom spaces.
The main use remains sports and public services, while complementary functions include catering, skyboxes and lounges, gyms, cultural, educational, and association spaces, without constituting large-scale retail but ensuring the daily activation of the facility. The project will generate public value through urban regeneration, new services, increased safety and accessibility, energy sustainability, and strengthening the city’s sports and tourist system. The Municipality of Genoa intends to maintain public ownership of the Stadium.
