The complex lies within the historic urban area, inside the old town, at the outer edge of the former defensive walls, yet it is fully integrated into the consolidated settlement fabric. Dating back to the 15th century and subsequently transformed, it preserves its layout with an internal cloister, the cistern, and the bell tower, featuring a two‑storey masonry building with a central courtyard. The village of Stilo is part of the “Borghi più belli d’Italia” (“The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy”) network. Stilo benefits from a rich and varied territory, stretching from the green ridges of Monte Cozzolino down to the golden beaches and crystal‑clear waters of the Ionian Sea. It stands at the foot of Monte Consolino and still retains the typical styles shaped by Byzantine and Norman influence, reflecting the historical settlements that marked its development. Renowned for the beauty of its architecture, it has preserved through the centuries an extraordinary historical richness, still expressed today in its courtyards, narrow lanes, majestic noble palaces, churches, and the imposing defensive walls with towers and city gates.

The village of Stilo, included in the “Borghi più belli d’Italia” (“The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy”) network, rises at the foot of Monte Consolino and still preserves the characteristic styles shaped by Byzantine and Norman influence, reflecting the historical settlements that marked its development. Renowned for the beauty of its architecture, it has preserved through the centuries an extraordinary historical richness, still expressed today in its courtyards, narrow lanes, majestic noble palaces, churches, and the imposing defensive walls with towers and city gates. The ancient, terraced village is characterised by dark‑stone houses that seem embedded in the rock. Known as the birthplace of the philosopher Tommaso Campanella, it is dominated by one of the main surviving examples of the Byzantine period: the Cattolica, a beautiful 10th‑century church and one of the most important monuments in the region, whose Greek‑cross plan still preserves the three apses and the five small domes typical of Byzantine‑medieval religious architecture.
