Bologna’s “Tecnopolo Manifattura – Data Valley Hub” is an international centre for big data processing that hosts:
1) The pre-exascale HPC supercomputer LEONARDO, managed by CINECA;
2) The data handling system ECMWF;
3) The new Tier-1 INFN data centre.
The Tecnopolo shall host the headquarters of other international players such as Bologna’s Rizzoli Institute, the National Weather Agency and the BI-REX innovation and big data centre, among others. The Hub also boasts partnerships with CMCC (Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change) and Italiameteo, as well as close relationships with local Universities, LEPIDA, the broadband network of the regional Public Administration and with many innovative companies. The properties are located in an abandoned industrial area and are available for the establishment of innovative activities to house offices, research centres and management activities consistent with the activities of the Tecnopolo, which represents one of the most interesting hubs in Italy. The building area will allow for the construction of an 11-storey building, called “Torre ” (the Tower), for a total area of 15,000 sqm; on the other hand, the building to be restored, called “Ballette”, is spread over 5 floors for a total area of 27,000 sqm.

The structures, laid out within the “Tecnopolo Manifattura – Data Valley Hub”, are located in the northern suburbs of Bologna (population 386,181), capital of both the Province of the same name (population 1,004,323) and of the Emilia-Romagna Region (population 4,450,508), one of the richest in Italy. Following years of neglect, the building complex, a former tobacco factory, was acquired in 2009 by the Region, which redeveloped it, ratifying agreements with some of the most important players in the supercomputing and Big Data sector. The entrance to the Tecnopolo is in Via della Manifattura, with quick access to the Bologna North Ring Road and public transport stop 100 m away. The area is located 5 km from the “Bologna Centrale” railway station and 3.5 km from the “Bologna Arcoveggio” exit of the “A-13” motorway (Bologna-Padua). The Bologna Interport is located 17 km from the area, while the Port of Ravenna is 81 km away. “Guglielmo Marconi” International Airport (7th Italian airport for passenger traffic) is about 7 km away from the area (6-10 minutes by car).
