The green area, facing north, is entirely fenced with metal mesh (approximately 2.50 m high), topped with barbed wire. The 42 structures built inside have different dimensions; those for management use are divided into two floors, while those used for other functions (mainly warehouses and depots) are built on a single level. The buildings not used as warehouses, located near the entrances, were previously used as an office and guardhouse and are mostly made of load-bearing masonry, with pitched roofs covered in tiles. All the buildings have masonry structures, plastered and painted, with most of the roofs made of double pitched wood with tiles; some roofs are also made with corrugated iron presumably made of asbestos cement fibre in poor maintenance conditions.
The property is located in the extra-urban area of Castronovo di Sicilia (population 2,786), part of the Metropolitan City of Palermo, in the Sicani Mountains area. The municipality, which extends for over 200 sqkm, is located on the central-southern edge of the province of Palermo, bordering those of Agrigento and Caltanissetta, south-west of the Madonie mountain range, in the valley of the Platani river, at the foot of Pizzo Lupo. The municipal territory borders with the municipalities of Lercara Friddi, Cammarata, Prizzi, Santo Stefano Quisquina, Bivona, Alia, Vallelunga Pratameno, Roccapalumba, Palazzo Adriano and Sclafani Bagni. Some caves attributable to the Sican people (6th century BC), which have been studied since 1743, can be found in the area. An open-air museum, the area, in addition to the evocative landscape, boasts a conspicuous historical heritage: the Matrix of the Madonna dell’Udienza (12th century), the Church of San Giorgio dei Greci (12th century), the Church of San Vitale (17th century), the remains of two castles, an Arab mill, and the remains of the Emir’s house can all be found in the vicinities. The area is located approximately 9 km from the town and can be reached via the provincial roads SP-78 and SP-79. The area is approximately 72 km from Palermo (70 minutes by car) and 57 km from Agrigento (50 minutes by car) and can be reached via the state roads SS-121 and SS-189 respectively.
