The planned intervention is located on the edge of the historic centre in the Musofalo valley, within the elevated roundabout built by ANAS at the end of the ’80s, serving as an interchange node for the suburban road access to the City of Catanzaro near the Tribunale metro stop and the important judicial complex of Catanzaro. The proposed intervention includes:

  • the enhancement of the existing capacity of the parking area located at the bottom of the roundabout (about 60 m lower), to be increased to at least 600 car spaces and 80 bus spaces;
  • the improvement of the access to the parking area through two vehicle ramps (also suitable for buses) accessible from the roundabout;
  • the realisation of interconnection systems, consisting of two inclined elevators in the tunnel for Corso Mazzini and two inclined elevators in the terminal section to Piazza Matteotti (Judicial complex) and at the Tribunale stop of the newly activated Catanzaro metro line, that connects the business hub, university campus, hospital, Regional Citadel, and the Marina area;
  • the development of commercial spaces intended for large exhibition/operational areas (showrooms, major clothing retails, etc.) that can also serve as attractive hubs for small and medium-sized businesses present in the historic centre.

The City of Catanzaro is built on a scenic hill between the Ionian Sea and the Sila mountains. The historic centre is the oldest part of the Calabrian capital. Characterized by a remarkable architectural heritage, it acquired much of its current appearance following the urban redevelopment carried out after the Italian Unification, during the Fascist era, and in the second half of the twentieth century. However, it retains the original layout of the Byzantine centre in the neighbourhoods developed during the medieval period. Within its perimeter are the main places of worship, three theatres, and four museums. Featuring ancient alleys, noble palaces, Baroque churches, and panoramic terraces, the medieval core also offers a view over the Gulf of Squillace.
