The Colonia Maino, donated by the industrials from Gallarate to he Municipality is in the middle of the bushes and lawns of the Valganna and is made up of a large amount of land partially bushy on the hill (chestnuts and beech tree) and partially lawn (on a plain) and by three buildings: the Mountain Colony (2 buildings articulated on three floors above the ground, with loft and basement), the Health centre (that develops itself on 4 levels) and the Home of the Guardian (small home with reinforced structure in brick and stone, on two levels above the ground). The property, according to the General Regulatory Plan of the Municipality of Marchirolo is classified in bush areas, while it is classified by the General Regulatory plan of the Municipality of Cugliate Fabiasco, as “Polarization area” (art. 33) with multi-functions; the main destination is touristic and recreational, with the exclusion of productive, residential destinations, if not limited to the necessities of the personnel dedicated to guardian, commercial work if not connected to the main activity, tertiary and with the exclusions of cultural equipment and institutional offices and agriculture with the exclusion of touristic facilities. All the area is limited for natural beauty pursuant to Law n° 1497 dated 29 June 1939 “Protection of natural beauty”.

The Maino Colony is situated between the valley of the Municipality of Cugliate Fabiasco (3,121 inhabitants) and Marchirolo (3,478 inhabitants), in the Province of Varese (890,528 inhabitants), between the Lago di Lugano and Lago Maggiore, at about 22 km from the chief administrative centre, along the road SS-233, that connects Varese with Ponte Tresa and from there, Switzerland. In the territory of Cugliate Fabiasco there is part of the line of fortification “north frontier” called “Cadorna Line”, in particular, the itinerary 5 on Mount la Nave. The high-speed road North-east of Varese, that is about 20 km from the zone, allows the entrance into highway A-8 (Milan-Varese). The railway station “Varese FN”, that guarantees frequent connections with the station Milano Cadorna, is 18 km away, while the International airport of Milano-Malpensa (2nd Italian airport with 22 million passengers in 2017) is 53 km away.
