The proposal aims to enhance the city’s historical and natural heritage through the redevelopment of the hillside trail network. The project includes routes dedicated to hiking, mountain biking, and hand biking, as well as infrastructures such as a Tibetan bridge, adventure park, climbing areas, and a bike park. The recovery of the former Granarolo Batteries and Forte Begato is planned, with improved accessibility and the installation of educational paths, integrating the historical sites into the new sports routes.
The project aims to transform the area of the former Granarolo Batteries into an outdoor recreational hub that integrates sports, nature, and culture. The green area will be enhanced while maintaining the topography and vegetation, with picnic areas and play spaces immersed in the woods. Next to the existing facilities, a 2,000 sqm skate park and a pump track for mountain biking will be built. The soccer and tennis fields will be redeveloped, with upgraded changing rooms and services, offering modern and fully usable facilities for users, families, and athletes, promoting outdoor activities in a unique historical and landscape context.
The proposal expands the enhancement interventions of the Walls and Forts, extending activities to the southern side of the hill. In synergy with the development of the Granarolo–Forte Begato Cable Car, it aims at environmental redevelopment and the recovery of the trail network, integrated with MTB disciplines: Cross Country, Enduro, and Downhill. The Skill Areas will be located in Forte Begato, within the Bike Hub. The project prioritizes safety, sustainability, and landscape integration, including zip lines, rope bridges, and low-intensity trails. An environmental protection intervention is also planned, with the restoration of terraces, water management, and reforestation.
The enhancement of Forte Begato, in continuity with the metropolitan sport park, repurposes it as a strategic infrastructure capable of integrating cultural, sporting, and landscape functions. With the bike hub and the repurposing of the barracks — intended for hospitality and museum services — the fort becomes a primary node of the Walls Park. The program includes the redevelopment of the large lawn and the arena for events, a climbing gym in the north bastion, and an adventure park in the forest. Connected to the MTB slope and the Granarolo cable car, the fort will manage access, flows, and services for outdoor activities.
| The project area is located on the northern hillside of Genoa, within the Parco delle Mura, a historic and landscape system characterized by fortifications, woods, and wide views over the city. The context is defined by a natural environment of great value, with an extensive network of trails and slopes suitable for high-intensity outdoor activities, such as mountain biking. The future Granarolo–Forte Begato Cable Car will enhance accessibility, connecting the hillside system to the urban fabric below. The area will host sports fields, wooded recreational spaces, MTB routes, climbing zones, and event areas, configuring itself as a multifunctional hub that integrates nature, culture, and sports on a metropolitan scale. | ||||||||||||||
