Oppido Mamertina (RC) – Former Courthouse

The building, a former courthouse, is located in the town of Oppido Mamertina, a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria. The hilly area where the property stands is halfway between the Gioia Tauro plain and the coastal areas and the Aspromonte Park, in a context of notable landscape interest. The building, which is in poor maintenance condition, can be redeveloped for hospitality purposes through a multi-year use concession, without being sold.

The building represents a significant example of post-1908 earthquake architecture, when public buildings of this type contributed significantly to the redevelopment of urban spaces. The asset, together with the former Registry Office, occupies an entire block bounded by four orthogonal streets. The property, a single-story structure, features a layout characterized by symmetry and geometric rigour. The audience hall, the main body of the building, is at the centre of the structure, surrounded on three sides by a corridor with private offices, located to either side of the central entrance, with a flat roof, terrace, and skylight. The building has a fenced courtyard of approximately 380 sqm. The sober architectural language expresses an essential classicism that gives the building a strong symbolic and institutional value.

The property is located in the urban area of Oppido Mamertina (population 4,678), a municipality within the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria, which occupies a strategic position in the so-called “pre-park” area, a hinge between the coast and the mountainous inland areas. Oppido is part of the Mamerto Anthropic Park: anthropological parks represent a new form of territorial protection and enhancement, aimed at integrating naturalistic, cultural, touristic, and historical-architectural resources. The area, with its historical and landscape heritage, represents a privileged access point to the Aspromonte National Park (formally established in 1994 and included in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network since 2021), which extends entirely within the province of Reggio Calabria, between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas, representing an ideal place for naturalistic, cultural, and spiritual itineraries. Its inclusion in regional and national territorial redevelopment projects strengthens its leading role in sustainable tourism. The area is located approximately 64 km from Reggio Calabria (50 minutes by car) and 100 km from Lamezia Terme (80-90 minutes by car). The “Gioia Tauro” exit of the A-2 motorway (Salerno-Reggio Calabria) is approximately 20 km from the area (25 minutes by car).
