Sustinente (MN) – MASP Mantua Agricultural Science Park

MASP aims to create a centre for training and innovation to improve agriculture and agro-industrial companies' competitiveness and environmental sustainability. The area, approximately 13,000 square metres, is part of the 17th century Villa Guerrieri Gonzaga in the province of Mantua, the heart of the northern Italian food valley. The MASP project involves converting the building into a hub focused on technology transfer through three main activities:
- master's and post-diploma courses on agri-food and precision agriculture;
- services to agricultural enterprises and technology transfer;
- promotion of local agri-food excellence.

Mantua Agriculture & Sustainability Project (MASP) is a name that, on the one hand, underlines the strong
correlation with the Mantuan territory and its excellence in agriculture. On the other hand, wants to stress
about the importance of competitiveness and environmental sustainability achievable by education and
technology transfer.
The challenge is to establish a centre of training and innovation whose objective is to increase the
well-being of local Lombardo-Veneto-Emilia communities by promoting the culture of innovation, lifelong
learning and environmental sustainability in local SMEs. These goals are achievable through the
management and the coordination of knowledge flows and technologies between universities, research
institutes and local companies.
Considering needs written in the previous section, MASP core businesses must be:

  • work-oriented master and post-diploma courses about agricultural, agri-food and environmental
    topics in particular with a technological and economic focus. This choice stems from the desire to
    attract individuals with a high level of education to the territory. People are ready to enter the labour
    market and thus the economy of the area. The educational offer, generally organised in
    8 months of course and 4 months of internship in local companies, allows:

    • to MASP to develop a network of relations with companies, to favour technology
      transfer;
    • to teachers to carry out their research and possibly spend time at other institutions for
      dissemination and scientific exchange activities;
    • to local businesses to relate to young people with high human capital;
    • to the students to put into practice the concepts and teachings addressed in the classroom.
  • consultancy and technology transfer to businesses, particularly in the agricultural sector;
  • agri-food local excellences promotion.

Let us analyse the Villa composition:

  • the main building of about 1,120 sqm can be walked on 4 floors;
  • the structure of the former stables covering an area of about 380 sqm which, divided over two floors, offers 600-650 sqm of floor space;
  • two smaller buildings for 140 sqm to be used for vehicle and tool sheds.

Activities take place in the main building:

  • didactics with post-diploma courses and postgraduate masters taking advantage of:
    • 6 classrooms of 50 sqm each,
    • 1 library and study room of approximately 250 sqm
  • co-planning and consulting for companies in these rooms:
    • 1 contamination lab of approximately 50 sqm
    • 1 start-up room and business consulting of about 50 sqm
    • 8 offices of 15-20 sqm each on average;
  • sales and promotion of local food products:
    • 1 point of sale and promotion of agri-food products of about 50 sqm
    • 1 relative warehouse of approximately 35 sqm

The structure of the former stables is dedicated to:

  • laboratories to teach, analyse and research for about 360 sqm
  • guesthouse for visitors and students for approximately 360 sqm

The pertinent courtyard is used for:

  • experimental cultivations, vegetable garden and modern greenhouses for about 7000 sqm
  • two parking lots for about 1400 sqm
