The estate has a main building with a “T” shaped layout, with three floors above ground and a basement with two open courtyards partially delimited by tall walls, typical of prisons, partly used as a parking lot. It was built in the first half of the 800’s, with a bearing brick structure and a wooden sloped-roof, built in a decentralized position in the main courtyard, where there are also a few annexes. Up to 2000, it was used as barracks, headquarters of the Teneza Comand of the Financial Police. In 2005, after a memorandum between the Ministry of Finance and the Municipality of Vigevano, to promote heritage sites, its use was modified under “Special Buildings and Sites”. The estate is therefore subject to certain restrictions regarding the landscape and monuments and is in an area of archaeological interest; in 2007, the Ministry of Heritage and Cultural Activities ceded that the site could be used for activities which are compatible with its historic and artistic value, therefore with “social cultural activites, a museum, tertiary and even residential (but not intensive) activities”, also extending it to “accommodation and commercial functions, limited to neighbourhood businesses”.

The property is located in the historic centre of the Municipality of Vigevano (pop. 63,142), in the province of Pavia (pop. 547,926), a short way from the Sforzesco Castle, from the Ducale Plaza and from the Cathedral’s Parish. It’s located in a residential area with civil and religious complexes, mainly used as residences; in the building’s surroundings, there are public offices (tribunal and attorneys) and tertiary and commercial buildings. The town is easily accessible by the SS-494 (vigevanese) that connects Milan with Alessandria, passing through Vigevano. The railway station is 1 km from the estate with trains to Milan (30 minutes to get to Milan Porta Genoa), with the Milan-Mortara line, and with Alessandria. Milan is 50 km away, Pavia 40 km, Novara 30 km and Vercelli is 44 km away. Via Milan’s west bypass (A-50) goes to the motorway, 43 km away, while the “South Pavia” toll-booth on the A-7 motorway (Milan-Genoa) is 24 km away. The international airport of “Milan-Malpensa” (Italy’s second airport with 19,5 million passengers in 2016) is 45 km away from the city.
