The historic building, built between 1920 and 1930 by the engineer Pietro Ploner, was part of the structure of the Travata drainage system of the Mantua Reclamation Consortium. Subsequently used as a guard post for the ecological surveillance service of the Mincio Park, with the decommissioning of the hydraulic functions, the property was transferred to the assets’ portfolio managed by Agenzia del Demanio, the Italian Public Property Agency. Subjected to a procedure for verifying its historical-artistic interest, the building has been declared of cultural interest as it still retains the original internal and external structures.

The sluice house, which has a rectangular layout, was built in load-bearing masonry with two-coat plaster and a wooden pavilion roof covered with a mantle of terracotta tiles. The building is laid out on three aboveground floors with two large terraces on the first floor on the south-east and south sides, the latter closed in the past to create an additional room. The floors are connected vertically via an internal staircase with wrought iron parapet and wooden handrails. A small tool shed and a large open area are part of the sluice house. The property is in a precarious state of conservation, and requires substantial renovations. The building will be redeveloped through a multi-year State leasing licence, without being sold.

Vista d'insieme

The property is located in an extra-urban area of the municipality of Borgo Virgilio (population 14,857), in the province of Mantua, south of the regional capital, which is about 16 km away (25-30 minutes by car). The former sluice house is located about 15 km from the town of Borgo Virgilio, in an agricultural area, near the Travata water drainage system, in a context of high landscape value, in the Mincio Regional Park; it includes the «Valli del Mincio» nature reserve, one of the most important in Europe, as well as the Vallazza nature reserve, a lake between the municipalities of Mantua and Borgo Virgilio characterized by river bights, strips of land and nature trails that are immersed in the vegetation; visitors can explore the bucolic nature of this reserve also by bike, via its three cycle paths. The “Mantova Sud” exit on the A-22 motorway is 4.5 km from the property (5-10 minutes by car), while the “Romanore” railway station on the Verona-Modena line is 18 km from the area (20-25 minutes by car).
