Genoa – Barracks Gavoglio

The complex, built in the 19th Century, precedes the creation of the district Lagaccio, one of the most highly urbanized and densely populated areas of the city.
After the acquisition of the area by the Municipality, the European Project UNaLab, in collaboration with LAND, has planned the important construction of a new urban park for the community. The creation of new green areas and community spaces has helped strengthen the relationship with the upper part of the neighbourhood. The solutions adopted and a strategic design of the urban green, have in fact increased the resilience of this area which, thanks to ecological, sustainable and inclusive choices, make it possible to deal more safely with extreme events due to climate change.

The former barracks is a listed building for its historical-architectural value and is the main entrance to the area of the new park. it develops on four levels above ground for a surface area of 9300 sqm and encloses a yard. It has very different rooms that therefore can be destined for different uses: residence (private apartments, for students or researchers, or cohousing), hostel, shops, crafts, practices, or various services.

With PNRR funds, work is currently underway to transform a part of the west wing into a kindergarten that will go alongside the new headquarters of the Birulò kindergarten: located on the third floor of the building with the entrance from the second floor, in what was once spaces dedicated to accommodation, will be equipped with a reception room and three multi-purpose classrooms. Additional spaces will be dedicated to workshops. Two rooms will be reserved for school staff and catering staff.

The building is in a panoramic position near the railway station of Porta Principe.

Other strengths are the easily accessibility (the future cableway station) and the already secured external park. Lagaccio is one of the most densely populated districts of Genoa. The buildings have wide open spaces and remarkable heights (up to 13 m).
