The development initiative has urban functions for the areas and properties that come from the modification of the functional use of the exhibition area and the pavilions nearby the nautical quay. This transformation follows the design of the New Eastern Waterfront (Master-plan of Renzo Piano) and puts together the development needs of one of the most important fields of the city (Ship repairs). In the area that is subject to the intervention, it is necessary to foresee residential, recreational, directional, sporting, commercial, as well as navigational canals of the new marines for yachts and spaces which can create meeting, free time, sport and culture points with the relevant parking areas. Renzo Piano’s proposal is the excavation of a long canal parallel to the coast, to the Sporting Complex to the Siberian door, with the main access that corresponds to the former NIRA building that looks out on the Marina della Fiera and that is on the border between the municipal property and the State port land. The initiative will be developed both through the sale with public tender than through a partial State concession.

The area subject to the transformation is situated along the seafront of Genoa (583,601 inhabitants) within the Metropolitan area (850,071 inhabitants) in the Liguria Region. The intervention creates a new urban axis between the Fiera (exhibition area) and the City where the latter reacquires the new seafront that it had lost and that, thanks to a pedestrian and bicycle connection of 11 km along the seaside, will connect the main tourist attractions amongst which the Hennebique area, situated in the Maritime Terminal zone, the Porto Antico and the medieval historical centre with its Rolli Palaces – UNESCO heritage. The railway station of Piazza Principe, which guarantees connections to the cities of Savona, La Spezia, Livorno, Turin, Milan and Rome, is about 5 km away, while the connection to the Highway “A-7” (Genoa-Milan) is about 6.5 km circa from the zone.
