The property is located in a context of extreme environmental and landscape value, in a stretch of coast falling within the marine protected area of Capo Rizzuto and in a territorial area where, over time, important archaeological remains have been unearthed. The tower is characterised by the presence of a large base with an almost square layout (20 metres per side), perhaps indicative of the intention to build a new structure that would have incorporated the previous one, built by Charles III around 1380. The actual tower develops from this base, with a truncated conical base and a cylindrical body distinguished from the underlying part by a tuff torus. The terminal part of the tower is characterised by the presence of a tuff trapdoor (placed in line with an opening below) and some loopholes. The inside of the tower can be accessed through a crumbling opening on the first floor, which is not accessible for structural reasons. Over the centuries the Old Tower was put to many uses, including that of a straw warehouse for customs purposes during the French occupation. The property was transferred to the State following a devolution decree of 08/10/1982 by the Ministry of Defence with dispatch no. 109 and transfer no. 224186 of 06/09/1990, and was used by the Municipality of Isola di Capo Rizzuto from 2003 to 2006 with a regular rental contract for cultural-tourism purposes.

The Old Tower is located in the suburban area of Isola di Capo Rizzuto (population 17,673), in the province of Crotone, along the coastal strip, overlooking the sea. The territory of Capo Rizzuto has been inhabited since ancient times. Some findings testify to the presence of Greek colonies starting from the 8th century BC. Moreover, the story linked to the name “Isola” purports that the city was founded by Astyoche, the sister of Priam. Capo Rizzuto has always been at the centre of history, thanks to its strategic position along the coast where the Old Tower stands, a cylindrical tower built in the 16th century to guard the coast against barbarian incursions. The property is located approximately 7 km away from the urban area (12 minutes by car), and is easily reachable by taking the Salerno – Reggio Calabria motorway and then exiting at the “Cosenza Nord” tolls. Crotone’s “S. Anna” airport is located approximately 12 km from the property (20 minutes by car).
