Salerno rises on the homonymous gulf in the Tyrrhenian Sea, between the Amalfi Coast and the Piana del Sele, where the Irno valley opens towards the sea. In the city centre, between the new Judicial Citadel and the railway station, there is an area of about 100.000 sqm concerned by an urban transformation project called CPS2.
The area interested by the project is situated in the heart of Salerno and occupies a large part of the railyard, being dismissed, of the historical Central Station. A master plan has been drawn up with the aim to give Salerno the opportunity to develop in its heart new strategic urban functions and to mend in a sustainable way two parts of the city through new squares, boulevards, and equipped parks. The basic idea is to reinterpret the historic urban fabric in continuity with the reference framework. In a strategic area, strongly connected with the surrounding fabric and characterized by high accessibility, the plan provides for:
The master plan provides for new buildings, squares, clearings, gangways, equipped and green rest stops along the axis of the park and of the surrounding area, with respect of the local traditions. The new buildings shall therefore follow the classic scheme of Salerno that splits the buildings along the directrixes of the city, with courtyard buildings opened onto green squares for leisure, refreshment, and markets. Shady porticos and sunscreen loggias on the facades help reduce consumptions, panoramic terraces refresh and open the buildings towards the landscape.
The plan develops in the heart of the city, between the railway station and the Judicial Citadel, serving as a connecting element between the historical district and the recent buildings. Regarding the infrastructures, the area is in a central position with respect to the intermodal mobility hub “rail- road-ship-airplane” currently being upgraded. Thanks to its strategic, central position, the future district will be the best infrastructured one in Salerno. The high-speed station and the traditional railway station, the underground and the bus station are located around the yard’s perimeter. The tourist port, the commercial harbour, and the maritime station can be reached by foot in a few minutes; the university campuses, the airport “Costa d’Amalfi”, the stadium “Arechi” and the General Hospital are just a few bus or underground stations away. In addition, it is provided for the realization of a new station façade, an underground intermodal mobility hub road-rail-foot, a system of private and public car parks, and a park destined to serve as large connecting infrastructure between the surrounding districts.
