The lighthouse Caderini is a marine beacon in southern Sicily, in the middle of the coast of the Gulf of Syracuse, not far from the city centre, in a marine and fluvial nature reserve. It was likely built in the first half of the 20th century and is made of a two-storeys rectangular tower with an internal staircase, entirely included in a one-storey rectangular building which in former times housed the accommodation for the lighthouse keeper before its definitive automation. The complex also includes some appurtenant buildings with ancillary functions. The beacon is still active, being a public service maintained and managed by the Ministry of Defence/MARIFARI.

Syracuse, capital of the homonymous province, is in the south-east part of Sicily towards the Ionian Sea. Its territory is very diverse: different hills of moderate height rise up in the area, while two rivers lap the south-west side of the city. The sea surrounds the city almost entirely; the coast is mainly rocky and jugged with different promontories, coves, sandy beaches, islets and peninsulas. Its unique location made Syracuse renowned for its sunsets, described over the centuries like the most beautiful in the world. With its innumerable monuments, architectures and cultural attractions, Syracuse is also one of the main cities of art in Europe, thanks to its rich and ancient history (more than three thousand years). In 2005 it has been included by Unesco among the World Heritage Sites, together with the rocky necropolis of Pantalica, at a few kilometres from Syracuse.
