Risk profile

The fortified structure, of impressive dimensions, has a front on the water of approximately three hundred meters plus the central keep. The rusticated walls are characterized by a central portal, forty cannon positions located on the water surface and a second battery located on the terraces. A system of thick walls and stairs aimed at making the fort invulnerable to fire from an enemy fleet is located in the rear part of the keep. The building was built around the mid-16th century on the remains of the “Castel Nuovo”, a previous defensive structure of the harbour mouth, according to the project of the architect Michele Sammicheli.
The Fort has been adapted several times to the evolution of military needs over time. At the end of the 18th century, the construction of the southern front was built, divided into three floors, as well as the two buildings on the western side used as ammunition depots and warehouses. During the Austrian period, interventions were carried out that modified the morphology of the Fort, such as the separation of the lunette from the body of the Fort by means of a canal. In the early years of the 20th century, new concrete buildings were built and used as bunkers and warehouses. At present, no war-risk characterization assessments are available.
The area overlooking the Lido island is characterized by the actual fortress system consisting of the following buildings: two service buildings, three warehouses, a command building, a tower, a portal, two casemates, two curtain walls, a former barber shop building, a storage facility and an electronic control unit. The armoury and the command secretariat are located in the trapezoidal area behind the fortress system and surrounded by a canal.

The property is located in a suburban area of Venice (population 250,913), on the island of Sant’Andrea, on the eastern side of the Venice lagoon, at the southern end of the island of Vignole and in a position overlooking the islands of Certosa and Lido. Currently the compendium can only be reached by private boats, as there are no moorings for vehicles carrying out public services. While waiting for an intervention on the integration of public access lines, its redevelopment will have to include the creation of a dedicated line and a landing pier to ensure the accessibility of the spaces.
