The MonteSyndial Container Terminal project, including the related intermodal platform, is located in the southern industrial area of Porto Marghera, within the Venice port system, and involves the creation of a modern and efficient integrated logistics infrastructure. The design and construction activity, currently underway, will allow for the creation of a significant and strategic work, both for its specific characteristics and in relation to the development possibilities of the entire port system of the Northern Adriatic Sea.
The MonteSyndial Container Terminal project, including the related intermodal platform, is located in the southern industrial area ofPorto Marghera, within the Venice port system and involves the creation of a modern and efficient integrated logistics infrastructure. The project will be developed on a territorial area of 84 ha in the Porto Marghera area overlooking the “Canale Industriale Ovest” (West Industrial Canal). The construction of the new Terminal will allow for the environmental recovery and functional reconversion of the abandoned industrial areas of Montefibre and Syndial. The area is connected by the evolution basin 3 to the Malamocco – Marghera canal and has a continuous quay front of about 1600 m. The project is divided into 3 functional sections:
1) Dock, complete with fenders and bollards, for ships of a size compatible with access to Porto Marghera (canal front of 1627 m, top level at + 2.80 m above sea level, flow rate of 50kPa, draught of -12.00 m.
2) Intermodal platform for maritime and land-on-land traffic, consisting of a total of 10 tracks (two bundles of 4 tracks, located inside yards served by gantry cranes and 2 tracks for locomotive release).
3) Central yard for the storage of containers (including sheds and logistics).
The procedural and authorization process including the Acquisition of the Environmental Impact Assessment and the remediation project can be considered concluded.
The area on which the Terminal will be built is located in the municipality of Venice (population 250,913), in the Porto Marghera area, one of the largest industrial sites in Italy, which has been the subject of redevelopment interventions for years. Nautical accessibility to the site is via the Malamocco-Marghera Canal with a wide and deep turning basin (basin no. 3 diameter 350 m) and will be further improved with the widening of the West Industrial Canal on which the MonteSyndial terminal overlooks, which will have a width of 190 m with an average draft of the access channel of 12 m. Vehicular accessibility is guaranteed by the presence of the road and motorway network of the Marghera area, in addition to various redevelopment projects, including the “new Romea State Road”. The railway network is already present in the area with the port connection and the Venezia Marghera Scalo station, but a redevelopment is also planned through a direct connection to the so-called “bivi line”.
