The former Convent of Saint Bonaventura, in front of the church of the same name, was built in the first half of the 1600 and constitutes a valuable example of ex-convent architecture. The building, transformed into a prison in 1890, was separated from the church through various interventions, converting it from an old monastery to a judicial prison. Used for this purpose until 2002, it was closed following the construction of the new prison. The building, square in shape with a central courtyard and perimeter wall, is divided into two aboveground floors as well as a third partial floor. The building currently presents serious structural problems, manifested by the collapse of large portions of the horizontal structures and widespread damage to the walls, which have caused it to be partially unusable. The property is subject to restrictions pursuant to Art. 10 of Legislative Decree no. 42/2004. According to the current GTP, the property falls in the homogeneous area A Historic Center A2.2. (Art. 28 – 33 of the Technical Implementation Rules) Compact Urban Fabrics with urban planning destination F18 – Congress Centre. The entire historic centre is declared a recovery zone pursuant to Law no. 457 /78. In this area, in addition to the Recovery Plans already approved and provided for in this Plan, further Recovery Plans may be identified pursuant to State Liability Law no. 71/78.

The property is located in the historic centre of Caltagirone (population 35,827), a municipality of notable historical and architectural value, included in the territory of the Metropolitan City of Catania; other important monuments such as the Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte, the Bourbon Prison, the Capitaniale Court, the Regional Museum of Ceramics and the nineteenth-century Villa Comunale, with a park of over 7 hectares, can be found a short distance away. Moreover, the property is affected by the religious path of San Giacomo, recognized by the Ministry of Culture and included in the Catalogue of Italian Religious Paths from 23 March 2023 (Managerial Decree no. 5745/23). The municipality is 68 km away from the “Fontanarossa” international airport of Catania, reachable both by private vehicle and by train, while the railway station is located approximately 3 km from the property.
