The development project is part of the major strategic plan for the area of Lolli-Notarbartolo, which sets out as a hub of strategic importance to make the urban mobility system more fluid, and to delocalise some of the centralised aspects of the city. It is characterised by the route from Fossa di Danisinni to the Notarbartolo railway station, passing via the ex Lolli station. The project includes the redevelopment of the railway area, filling in the cuttings and designing of a public green area plus services covering some 23 thousands m². This will include, as well as residential functions (with a skyscraper 144 metres high), plus office and commercial buildings as well as the new “Gateway” to the city: a large public building serving as a railway station, contemporary multimedia library, special tourist accommodation and place of general interest. The area is owned by the Italian state railway, which holds the development rights and covers 18,000 sq. m the use of which has not yet been identified.

The development area is located in a near-central zone of Palermo (678,492 inhabitants), capital of the province of Palermo (1,276,525 inhabitants) and of the region (5,092,080). Palermo is Italy’s fifth largest city in Italy, and the second largest in Southern Italy in terms of residents. Its millenary history dates back to its founding as a Phoenician city-port between the 7th and 6th centuries BC, and it has played a vital role in the history of the Mediterranean and Italy. The project area is close to the Notabartolo railway yard, crossed by Via Notarbartolo, a road that runs through the city, making its way to the port area. In the opposite direction it is crossed by Viale Regione Siciliana, a main road that also links the Palermo-Catania (A-19) and Palerma-Trapani (A-29) motorways. On completion of the project, the area will be the city’s new transport interchange hub.
